Ada Yang is literally the oddest and yet real down to earth being i've encountered in the last couple of months. I use the word odd in celebration. She is Sierra Leonean, married to a Chinese artist who was apparently looking for an African Woman for a muse and wife and the 'odds' that he  would find a Sierra Leonean woman who fits the bill and who too is an artist is all very 'odd'. And as a sucker for romance, i also find this story very sweet. Ada is calm in person, soft spoken and one can tell that she truly has become a blend between her roots and her new home. It is evident in her art, in the clothing collection she put together and in the way she presents her self. Odd i tell you, oddly refreshing. 

I attended her fashion show at Bintumani last week and had a ball! The truly heart warming part of it all was when Ada spoke chinese then krio and expressed her love for her country in the most sincere and non threatening manner. Her humility was refreshingly odd. I find Ada ODD, and in that absolutly beautiful.

I did not like the fact that January 6th is a date many know, but in the two + years i've lived in Freetown it was not a date that we commemorated at a national scale.

In attending and participating in StoryMoja Hay Feastival in Nairobi last month, i had the opportunity to attend a dialogue series entitled "shadism" where i got to meet Ng'endo Mukii in person and watch her short film, 'yellow fever' featured and act as an entry point to discussions around race, identity, conceptions of beauty, blackness, self love, ownership, bodies....black/african bodies in particular. It was awakening for me to be surrounded by women of all body shapes, sizes, skin shades, hair textures and perspectives about their bodies and what it means/meant to be an African/black/woman of color growing up. The panel was buzzing, the stories were at times haunting, other times all too real and honest, most importantly, the topic laid at the core of how these women/us women come to view ourselves.

yes we are still under renovations:  in the main time i, fatou wurie, am processing. as a photographer and poet undressing, laying bare my spirit and dreams to world_ is imperative to the work i do. constantly conversing with fear_ is giving way to growth growing _come undone_CHOICE.

Emmerson: I believe in humility, i believe that everything has been be possible through the high power, it all fell into place because i don't get caught up in the hype.

OH MY JAH-ITS CREATIVE COLLECTIVE - RAW

last friday evening (april 20th) was an evening on its on, super special to me because along side two beautiful men (abdala & ahmad) we were able to put together a creative evening. It consisted of live music, pop, poetry, prose, humor, jazz, reggae- all sprinkled with a little soul at the beautiful restaurant Bliss. With 150+ at the event, it was packed at all times during the evening, food was being pass around, drinks ordered, art shared, and of course a rack with her latest collection, AMIZO of MARYZO DESIGNS graced us and dressed 3 of the artists who performed that evening. By the end of the night, i was happily exhausted. This is what we are aiming for, to gestate an artistic community rooted in integrity and accountability and most importantly the simple love of sharing their art with the rest of the world. It is healing, really healing i believe. In valuable lessons learned first time around and i look forward to where PART DEUX will take us.

I'm looking forward to this photography exhibition by Babak Fakhamzadeh taking place at Bliss Patisserie on Wilkinson Road, Freetown Sierra-Leone. The exhibition juxtaposes old freetown with present day freetown. if you are in town, check it out, if you aren't, i'll post some photos up!
