inspired by Warsan Shire

"My girl is holy, is sacred, is pure
is clean, is loved, is whole, is beautiful
is worthy, is okay, is alone, is just fine
just the way you are girl
just the way you look babe
with that dirty mouth
and those hands, wherever they have been
and that sadness, whatever caused it
and that anger, wherever it came from
and that fear, who ever brought it
you are my girl, girl, you are me  " - Warsan Shire

GOOGLE pays homage to Soul Queen of Africa, Miriam Makeba

" Everybody now admits that apartheid was wrong, and all i did was tell people who wanted to know where i come from and how we lived in South Africa. I just told the world the truth. And if my truth then becomes political, i can't do anything about that" -- Miriam Makeba

These were the women i grew up listening to, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Brenda Fassie and of course our beloved Miriam Makeba. My mother adored her style, i was young and enthralled by her music. The older i got the more appreciated her music for the truth, soul behind it.  Google Doodle did a good job in celebrating her legacy. These are our  Africa sheros.

SISTAS WITH VOICES | THE PRACTICE

The longer i am back home the more I am 'getting it'. My heart is steadying itself, digging deep, planting self and re-orienting my purpose and vision in the world of the arts. It is only recently that accepting and proudly understanding myself as a story teller with responsibility and accountability to the community and my fellow artists has become an imperative journey for me. I am respecting the responsibility and beauty that comes with this and in the process, asking my fellow sisters and brothers who themselves are openly, clearly, and very beautifully bold to come together to “just do it”. Just do it meaning, sharing with the rest of the world the talent, gift and stories that exist at the very core of Sierra Leonean society. We aren’t just those people that sing, dance, paint or organize shows; we aren’t just at the periphery of society’s consciousness,
